The main campus is nestled on a mountainside overlooking the Salish Sea on beautiful Vancouver Island – the traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples. The university’s main campus is located in Nanaimo. There are regional campuses in the Cowichan Valley and qathet Region (Powell River) and a centre in Parksville-Qualicum. An hour up the coast from Nanaimo, the Deep Bay Marine Field Station, which provides further opportunities for engagement and research, is equipped with state-of-the-art labs and a seawater tank near an estuarine ecosystem. .
VIU programs include graduate and undergraduate degrees, trades diplomas and certificates, continuing education and academic upgrading. Students can take part in a variety of applied, experiential and research activities. At VIU, students can engage in academic research projects as early as their second year of study. Indigenous education is a priority at VIU. The University has seven Elders-in-Residence who provide counselling, guidance and support to all VIU students. All students are encouraged to attend cultural events on the campuses.
