With over 100 programs addressing the environment, sustainability and social justice issues, UVic offers endless ways for students to align their learning with their values. The university’s faculty and graduate students consistently receive national and international awards for their teaching and research. UVic was the first university in Canada to have three students selected as 3M Canada National Student Fellows in a single year. It continues to attract top student leaders from around the world. Outside of academics, UVic’s Vikes varsity athletics program is one of the best in the country, with a record of 88 national championships in 12 different sports. Located on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, UVic is committed to honouring the laws and protocols of the local Nations and to supporting the success of all Indigenous students, staff and faculty. Rooted in the local teachings, the First Peoples House provides a home away from home for Indigenous students. Additionally, the Office of the Vice-President Indigenous (OVPI) oversees support services, programming, policy development and other Indigenous-led initiatives. UVic launched the world’s first joint Indigenous law degree in 2018, which will be housed in the new National Centre for Indigenous Laws, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024. The university also offers programs in Indigenous language proficiency and revitalization, Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Governance, Indigenous Specialization in social work, and the world’s first custom MBA in Advancing Reconciliation.
