Located on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, UVic is committed to honouring the laws and protocols of the local Nations and to supporting the success of all Indigenous students, staff and faculty. Rooted in the local teachings, the First Peoples House provides a home away from home for Indigenous students. Additionally, the Office of the Vice-President Indigenous (OVPI) oversees support services, programming, policy development and other Indigenous-led initiatives. UVic launched the world’s first joint Indigenous law degree in 2018, which will be housed in the new National Centre for Indigenous Laws, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024. The university also offers programs in Indigenous language proficiency and revitalization, Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Governance, Indigenous Specialization in social work, and the world’s first custom MBA in Advancing Reconciliation.
