Description
The University of Northern British Columbia is one of British Columbia’s premier research universities, set amidst the spectacular landscape of northern B.C. It provides undergraduate and graduate learning opportunities that explore cultures, health, economies, science and the environment. The university’s research strengths can be found in the environment and natural resources; community development; northern, rural and environmental health; and Indigenous studies. In addition to fostering and celebrating academic excellence, UNBC is a welcoming and inclusive place, renowned for small classes, experiential and community-based learning opportunities, and regional learning and research opportunities.
Most students attend the largest campus in Prince George, where they have easy access to outdoor recreation, including skiing and snowboarding, mountain biking and hiking. The university also offers classes and research opportunities throughout northern B.C., including at campuses in Terrace, Fort St. John, and Quesnel, and in Gitlaxt’aamiks through a federated agreement with the Wilp Wilxosh’kwhl Nisga’a Institute.
UNBC is leading a sustainable future through education, research and community impact and has won numerous awards for its environmental initiatives. In 2010, it tied with Harvard for having the best campus sustainability project in North America — a bioenergy system that acts as a platform for education, research, community partnerships, and demonstrates technology of particular value to rural, resource-based regions. UNBC hosts the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health and is home to several research institutes, including the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute and the Community Development Institute. It maintains two research forests and the Quesnel River Research Centre. All provide opportunities for education and research across the natural, social and health sciences.
