University of Manitoba

Description

The University of Manitoba is building a better world. UM is mitigating climate change impact from the Arctic and taking on food insecurity by developing hardy crops on prairie fields. The university is advancing Reconciliation together with Indigenous communities, and is fighting for human rights through healthcare worldwide. UM is a university for those who want to make a difference.
Manitoba’s largest and most research-intensive university offers more than 100 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs, opportunities to gain real world experience in co-op programs, and to conduct impactful postdoctoral research.
Many first-year students enrol in University 1 – a unique, flexible program that allows students to meet first year requirements even if they’re not yet sure which degree path they want to take.
UM’s success stems from its community connections. Cross-program collaboration and immersive, experiential learning transform the student experience. Students access mentorship and support, enjoy state-of-the-art recreation facilities, and gather to cheer on 16 Bison sports teams. The university is home to more than 2,730 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students — one of the largest Indigenous student populations in Canada — including more than 270 graduate students. International students make up 22.7% of the student population. UM has two main campuses. The Fort Garry campus sits alongside the winding Red River in south Winnipeg. The Bannatyne campus – home to the colleges of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and rehabilitation sciences, is downtown, next door to Manitoba’s largest health care facility. More than 50 research facilities foster collaboration, scholarship and ground-breaking innovation at UM in areas that include: Arctic system science and climate change; advanced materials characterization; proteomics; global health; and immunity, inflammation and infectious disease. These facilities also offer unique training opportunities for students.
